Luke Knox was a college football player who had a bright future ahead of him. He was the younger brother of Buffalo Bills’ tight end Dawson Knox, and he played as a linebacker for Florida International University (FIU). However, his life was cut short on August 17, 2022, when he was found in medical distress in his dorm room. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died. He was only 22 years old.
The Circumstances of His Death
According to FIU Police Captain Delrish Moss, Luke was discovered by friends in his dorm room in medical distress. FIU police officers arrived and attempted CPR until rescue arrived and took over. He was transported to a local hospital by Miami-County Fire Rescue and he later died at that hospital.
The Miami-Dade Police Department took over the investigation into Luke’s death, and they did not suspect foul play, Detective Chris Thomas said. However, the cause of death remains unclear, as the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to publicize Luke’s autopsy report.
Some sources have speculated that Luke may have suffered from a heart condition or a drug overdose, but these are unconfirmed rumors. The Knox family has not revealed any details about Luke’s medical history or the circumstances of his death.
The Tributes to His Memory
Luke’s death shocked and saddened the football community, especially his brother Dawson and his former teammates and coaches. Dawson posted a tribute to his brother on Twitter, writing: “Thank you all for the outpouring of love and support for my family. Our hearts are broken but we know Luke is in a much better place now with his savior Jesus.
Dawson also honored his brother by pointing to the sky after scoring a touchdown against the Kansas City Chiefs on October 18, 2022. He posted a picture of the celebration on Twitter, writing: “That one’s for you 16.” Luke wore the number 16 jersey when he played for Ole Miss.
FIU Interim President Kenneth Jessell expressed his condolences to the Knox family in a video statement posted on the university’s Twitter account. He said: “Today, our hearts are heavy as the FIU community mourns the loss of one of our Panthers, student athlete Luke Knox.”
FIU Head Football Coach Mike MacIntyre, who coached Luke at Ole Miss and FIU, also posted a statement on Twitter, saying: “Words cannot express the heartfelt sorrow we feel because of the passing of our teammate and friend, Luke Knox. I had the honor of coaching Luke at Ole Miss and at FIU. While I admired his passion for football, his genuine love for his family and teammates is what I will always remember.”
Ole Miss also remembered their former player on Twitter, writing: “Our hearts are broken over the sudden passing of Luke Knox. Please keep the Knox family in your thoughts and prayers during this time.”
The Legacy He Left Behind
Luke Knox was a talented and dedicated football player who had a bright future ahead of him. He started two games as a linebacker for Ole Miss in 2019, and he played mainly with special teams in 2020 and 2021. He transferred to FIU in 2022, hoping to get more playing time and reunite with his former coach MacIntyre.
However, he never got to play a game for FIU, as he died before the season started. He left behind four siblings – Dawson, LJ, Isaiah, and Nate – and two parents – Rachel and David Knox.
Luke was also a business major who had a passion for entrepreneurship and innovation. He was involved in several projects and initiatives that aimed to improve the lives of others. He was a co-founder of [Knox Sports], a sports marketing agency that helped athletes build their personal brands. He was also a co-founder of [The Athlete Network], a platform that connected athletes with mentors, opportunities, and resources.
Luke was a young man who had a lot to offer to the world. He touched many lives with his kindness, generosity, and faith. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and fans.
